Facts on Children’s VisionChildren Eye Exams

  • 1 in 5 children entering school has a vision disorder, and
  • 1 in 6 children has been misdiagnosed with a learning disability when in fact they have a correctable vision problem.

Not knowing differently, many of these children accept poor vision and other eye problems as normal. If left unchecked, there could be serious long-term effects.

80% of a child’s learning is based on vision, so excellent visual skills, and eye health are critical to a child’s development.

It is recommended that children have their first eye exam between the age of 6 to 9 months, then yearly thereafter.

The Problem With Vision Screenings

Vision screening performed by a visiting or school nurse is not a comprehensive eye exam. These screenings pick up some vision problems, but they may miss other serious eye and vision conditions. In addition, children often do not get the vision care that they need after failing a vision screening, possibly because of poor communication with parents who may or may not be at the vision screening.

Vision screenings cannot replace your children’s comprehensive eye exam performed by a doctor of optometry. Call us or simply book online for your children’s eye exams today.
