The following are the most common refractive vision conditions. You may have a combination of these conditions. Fortunately, most of them can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery in most cases.

Nearsightedness or myopia

  • Eye focusing power too strong
  • Blurry distance vision
  • Clear near vision
  • Usually occur after the age of 6

Farsightedness or hyperopia

  • Eye focusing power too weak
  • May experience headache and eyestrain
  • Clear to moderate distance vision, but eyes have to over work
  • Blurry to moderate near vision, but eyes again have to over work
  • Common in children and is often missed in “vision screenings”

Astigmatism

  • Blurry distance and near vision
  • May experience headache or eyestrain
  • Caused by irregular or oval shaped cornea or crystalline lens
  • Occur at any age

Presbyopia

  • Blurry near vision
  • Caused by loss of focusing ability resulting from normal aging process
  • Sometimes experience headache or eyestrain
  • Usually occur after the age of 40
